Essential goods and the people who relied on them moved efficiently by rail, shaping industries and communities alike. The Northeast, with its bustling metropolitan centers such as New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, is no exception. These cities owe much of their growth and economic success to the railroads. Tasked with preserving and sharing this history, we tell the story of railroads’ humble beginnings and their lasting impact on the region’s development and everyday life.
